In the secluded woods of North Carolina, a blind teenager named Solomon lives entirely alone. Despite his blindness, Solomon navigates his surroundings by tying a long rope around his waist, which remains connected to his cabin. With only this tether for guidance, Solomon survives by fishing, foraging, and trapping small animals for food. His sole source of other engagement is a tape-recorded message that contains three enigmatic rules:

  1. When you hunt or scavenge, do it for two—one for the forest and one for you.

  2. When your will is almost gone and you feel like giving up, find comfort in singing our song.

  3. You must never, ever let go of the rope.
